Halnaker Tree Tunnel
The Halnaker Tree Tunnel is located just north of Chichester at the north end of the hamlet of Halnaker in West Sussex on the Chichester to Petworth road. It follows the route of Stane Street, the ancient Roman road that linked Chichester to the city to London. Known as ‘Mill Lane’ the footpath, which leads to Halnaker Windmill, has been trodden into a gulley over the centuries, which combined with the overhanging trees creates a magical tunnel of trees. This is a photographers ‘classic’ in West Sussex, each trying to find their unique perspective.
Halnaker Tree Tunnel Location
Halnaker Tree Tunnel is located in the South Downs National Park, there is a small carpark on the western side of the A259 just north of Halnaker village. From the carpark take the right hand track, Denge Lane, heading north and the footpath leads you to the tunnel of trees. If you keep going you’ll get to Halnaker windmill on the top for great views over Chichester and the surrounding area.
Halnaker Windmill Trail
The car park described above only caters for around 10 cars, so is often full. To allow more people to visit the windmill via the tree tunnel there is now a fully signposted trail that starts in nearby Boxgrove. Just park in the village hall car park (postcode PO18 0EE) and follow the signposts, for a 2 mile walk each way,
